Nigeria's Mining Marshals have arrested more than 600 suspected illegal miners and recovered about 100 illegal mining sites since the specialised unit began operations, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has disclosed.
The NSCDC said more than 500 suspects have also been taken through prosecution processes as part of the continuing enforcement campaign against illegal mining.
The figures were disclosed by Mining Marshals Commander Attah Onoja, who attributed part of the unit's operational results to community intelligence and cooperation with other stakeholders.
The disclosure comes amid renewed national scrutiny of illegal mining following the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in NSCDC custody in Niger State.
